I was wondering what the best pool cues are for the mid-price range? Is it worth buying cues online (Ebay for example). Besides custom-made cues, what brands and prices should I look for? Location Sydney, Australia

  1. I agree with the others for the most part, but if are looking for a "good" cue on the lower end <150.00. Look for a dufferin. I really like that brand and recomend it to all who are buying their "first cue". It is a solid cue and if you chose that you aren't serious about the game. You are not out a lot of money. In the mean time get a feel for others. If you have friends who have nice cues. Ask them if you can try take a look at it. Understand that people are generally very protective of their cues so be respectful. You may want to just get to the table and stroke it a few times without actually hitting anything.

I know I am very perticular about who touches my cues. I play with Gilbert custom cues (one of them was given to me by Andy himself) and I don't let anyone touch it unless I think they are serious about buying one and then its only out of respect to Andy. He makes an excellent cue.

Most of all, realize that having a nice cue doesn't make you a world beater. Good players can see right thru your game at any skill level and if its not strong, you could be easy prey.  Good luck.

  2. Like the others, McDermott, Meucci, etc. are good cues.  Yes you can pick up a good cue on Ebay.  I paid $200 for a Meucci that retails for $700.  But if you are a beginner, you can go to your local Billiards store and try out the different cues.  Each person likes different weights, lengths, and thicknesses.  A couple hundred dollars is an OK price for someone just starting out.  I wouldn't spend more than that.  My family has paid over $1500 for a cue or two, but we really are serious about the game.

  3. McDermott, Joss, Meiucci (I think I spelled it right) and Viking to name a few. They all make nice cues in many price ranges. I own a Joss and my girlfriend owns a McDermott and I like both. I would look for what you like personally no matter the brand. When you start to play with the same cue consistently your game will improve dramatically.

  4. I use the  ELIMINATOR graphite cue stick. It's great on Breaks and carries me through the whole game.  And the price is reasonable $150.00 to $250.00

  5. I would go with a mcdermott cue they have a lot of cues in the 300 to 500 range which is more low to midlevel in fine cues i play with a m72a and i love it.  also if you buy from an authorized dealer you get a lifetime warrenty.  this even includes warpage which is more than any other manufacturer will give.  Don't buy from ebay because they are not authorized dealers which means no warrenty so if it breaks the repair is all on you good luck
