Question:

Question regarding deli meat choices

With the cost of lunch meats souring, it can cost a fortune to buy enough to feed my kids for lunch. So, my husband and I recently purchased a deli slicer to cut down on this cost. I tried it out on some smoked ham and it turned out great. I know it had added water. Should I get meats that have more added water? And what kinds are best (brands specifically if known)?

  1. Get a nice piece of corned beef cook it for dinner one night, and the next day slice the rest.

Do the same with roast beef.

If you ask you may be able to buy a few inches of bologna at a cheaper price per lb.

We used to alway have a salami hanging in the cupboard and they last months, just slice off the amount you need.

  2. Hi there,  the best way to go about this is to find a small goods factory in your  town , that way you cut out the (middleman) that will make a good profit every time he sells you  the deli meat you  buy of him in bulk,  Next about the brands, walk into any deli and look at the different choices they have , find one that looks good to you  , ask the guy behind the counter who makes it ? , and ask him if you could have a taste (a slice) that you are willing to pay for , that way when you go and buy 2 or 3 kilos of salami your not stuck with something that you don't really like , about the different types there are,  there are hundreds of different ones for every city and every country , but  here are my favorites  and i will also tell you how to make some great ones as well ,I'm in OZ so the names might be different but you will get what I'm talking about, Devon  (Bologna)  its cheap and not too bad, Mortadella is one of my favorites but you will have to look around for a  great tasting one  because they are not all the same, smoked turkey salami is lean,  smokey , and quite tasty, buy your corned beef from a butcher ask him how to cook it for  rolls and all ways have some of that as well, ham you want (without water) just like bacon, Let me tell you that anything with added water to it is LOW quality, the best way to go about ham is to buy a whole boneless front leg , its small enough to go through without getting sick of eating ham for two months and you will save heaps as well, next i would  roast a nice piece of beef  medium to rare that way it slices easily, another absolute favorite of mine is Italian Porchetta = you get some lean pork belly rub salt , pepper, Rosemary, and chopped garlic all over it , roll it all up and tie it with butchers twine , roast it in a really hot oven half an hour then turn down the heat to cook it  for another half hour per pound or half a kilo , stick it in the fridge and slice it the next day ,  next we come to salami , taste first and never buy a real fatty one no matter what, buy a lean one, then there's pastrami that gets a bit expensive and not everyones favorite , there's rolled chicken roll that's really mild , there's much more but its all down to tasting and searching for them  , that's just a start, before i leave you just a reminder to wash the slicer all ways before with a  weak bleach  wash, and allways after with hot soapy water, watch out because the blade is  sharp,      if you have anymore guestions feel free to ask me  , and enjoy your investment

  3. If your gonna use deli meat, Boar's Head is the best. Otherwise, start using a crock pot more often - you'll save $ and it's healthier since you know what's going into the meal Remember what you feed your kids today will impact their adult life.

  4. What you can do now is bake a turkey, ham, some beef etc and carve that - real good.
