Okay, so i have a 22 in. flat screen in my bedroom with a router behind it- the router is for the internet which for some reason comcast could not make wireless so my comp only works when all the wires and stuff are hooked up. my deal is, i wanna rearrange my room and put all this stuff on the other wall, but the cable cord and router cord seem to be too short- should i buy new ones at best buy and just go ahead as planned? or will unplugging and moving all this just be a hassle and not plug back in as easily as id like?

any tips or suggestions- thanks!

  1. Why don't you just buy a wireless router??? You don't have to use the router Comcast gave you, that is just the one they give with their service. With a wireless router you only need to have one cable hooked from your cable modem to the router and thats it... Everything else can hook up wirelessly. It's stupid to put money into ethernet considering how expensive they are...

  2. You have a few options...

Easiest way - plug everything in like it is:

-If the cable-tv wire is what's too short, measure and get a longer one at Lowe's or Home-Depot.  It's really cheap too.  If you have another cable jack closer just move the whole mess - it doesn't need to be that exact plug on the wall.

-If the network wire s too short you can get a longer one of those, just measure and get a longer one - either Cat5, Cat5e, or Cat6 as they're all the same for what you care about.  I'm not sure where it would be cheapest, at a electronics store like CircuitCity or BestBuy, or at the hardware store.

    Harder way:

-If you already have a router (has 4-5 computer plugs on it as opposed to the single computer plug on a modem) so what you need is a "Access Point" - or maybe chaper a Router that's set to AP (Access Point) mode.  My $39 Belkin Wireless-G router can do this, you may need to call Belkin for the directions though as it's not documented well.  Then just set up security and go wireless.

-If you don't have a router (you're using a modem that has one port) you can get a wireless router.  My $39 Belkin router came with a CD that guides you step by step - litterally down to what plug goes where.  It also helped set up security and such.  This was a lifesaver before I understood how routers and networking worked, I just followed the steps and it all worked.  Other brands probably have similar setup discs but I've never tried them.
