Question regarding visa Thailand?

My son has invited his thai friend over to stay with us in the UK as a family. She says she needs a photocopy of his passport and a letter from us to give the Thia embassy to prove that we sponser her to come and stay with us. She would be staying for 2-4 weeks. Is this usual? Just checking.
