Question regards home cinema?

Hi I have purchased a 50" lg plasma and lg surround system and am useless at wiring up!! I thought it was hooked up okay but cannot get the surround through the tv!! It does sometimes work on dvds but not always. I have also just bought the hdmi cable and connected it from the tv to dvd player to allow simplink but do I also need an optical audio cable as well??

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated

Since it sometimes works and sometimes it doesn't I think it's either a fault with your wire/connectors (I have seen many HDMI connectors that give this problem) or it can be because of DRM.
