john can mow the yard in 2 hours. Fred can mow the yard in 3 hours. How long will it take if they work togethe?

1/2 + 1/3 = 1/x

now multiply 1/2 + 1/3 by the LCM (6x) sooo 6x(1/2 + 1/3 = 1/x) so now its easier.... 3x + 2x = 6

so 5x = 6

x = 6/5

1.2 hours?

fred can mow 1/3 of the yard in one hour

if they work together they can mow

(1/2* number of hours)+(1/3*number of hours)= 1

call the number of hours x

1/2x + 1/3x = 1

5/6x = 1

x = 1.2 hours
