what is the income like, and what is your opinion on being an esthetician? thanks!

  1. My area is saturated with estheticians, making it difficult for some people to find jobs.  Check the Craigslist spa jobs listings in the area you want to work in.  If there are lots of listings for estheticians, you should be good to go.

As far as income, it's up to you.  If you are working in a medical setting the pay will be set.  In a spa setting it's usually straight commission or hourly plus commission.

Personally I love giving facials and waxing, but I love lasers even more.  Everyone has a niche.  One girl I went to school with only does make-up, another will do anything but waxes, one does spray tans, one works for a dermatologist, another works for a plastic surgeon, a couple work for spas.

Research schools carefully.  If there is a specialty school in your area, like a medical esthetics school, don't go there if you don't want to do that.

In the meantime, hit up some used bookstores and try to find the Milady Esthetics course book (the name of which escapes me), Skin Care: Beyond the Basics by Dr Mark Lees.  I've seen him speak and his book, which is really a textbook, is like a Bible to me.  Don't buy them new, they are super expensive.
