If a teacher gave your child 50 swats with a paddle, would you give him the same punishment when he got home. A teacher actually did this sometime ago. This seems extreme to me.

  1. That teacher deserves to be arrested.

One swat, ok. Two, pushing it. Three or more is simply abuse.

  2. No, I would not. That is way too much!!

  3. If my son were to get in trouble at school, he would also get in trouble at home, but it wouldn't be the exact same punishment, and would never be paddle swats.

  4. Depends on what the kid did.  50 Swats seems harsh too me but if the kid potentially hurt or killed someone (i.e. firing his BB gun at passing cars) 50 swats isn't enough....

It's best to realize what punishments work best for the kids.  Some respond better to talks, time outs or guilt trips rather than hitting.

  5. 50 swats?  I don't even think so!

  6. The states where paddling is still legal in public schools, usually have the worst public school test scores, grad rates, etc.

  7. My children would not attend a school where anyone paddles the kids. That kind of discipline needs to be left to the parents. If they cannot control the child they can suspend or expel, not hit.

  8. I wouldn't go to that extreme, no, but I also wouldn't live anywhere where it was legal for a teacher to use corporal punishment on my child.

If my child got into serious trouble at school, they would also be in trouble at home if I believed that the punishment was just. Here, a child can be suspended for protecting themselves if they are physically attacked by bullies on the playground, or for wearing an article of clothing that could be "gang-related," such as an all-red or an all-blue shirt. In those or similar cases, not only would my child not be punished at home, but I would protest the punishments all the way through the court systems if need be.

  9. Depending on the age of the child the punishment is much more effective if given right after the event.  Waiting until after the child gets home really isn't as effective.  I am glad teachers don't paddle anymore at school as there are much more effective ways to discipline.

  10. it's too bad they can;t use capital punishment in school anymore
