I'm going to Italy and will traveling within the country by rail (train). I need to buy a pass, but I see different options/websites. What is the difference between getting a pass from Trenitalia, Eurail, and any other companies? And don't they all use the same tracks anyway?

  1. Yes I suppose that them use all the same railway. When I been in Spain and Portugal with a Inter-rail ticket I had buy the ticket from trenitalia. After all trenitalia manage the Italian railways.

    bye

  2. i'm italian and for me it's better if you rent a car, cause here trains aren't in good conditions.................................

travel by car in the freeways!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    BYE BYE!!!!!

  3. Trenitalia, former monopolist, still runs 95% of trains in Italy; there are smaller companies (for instance Ferrovie Nord in north) which manage some smaller routes.

Anyway, if you plan to travel inside one nation only, Eurail and similar aren't advisable. Better you buy the ticket at the railway station or in advance at Trenitalia site  http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html

Ther you can also find any information you need about the different kinds of train available http://www.trenitalia.com/en/treni_stazi...

and a guide for use of trains in Italy http://www.trenitalia.com/en/area_client...

You can also buy "ticketless": a code will be sent you through e-mail.

Other companies I mentioned above may be useful only if you need to travel in the area they operate (for instance north of Milan/Como area for Ferrovie Nord) along with or instead of Trenitalia.

  4. I was in Rome late last year. The Euro Star is the nicest. It is a bit more expensive than the other (Trenitalia)trains, but worth it. It is also faster.

www.euro-star.com is a good place to start.

    Enjoy!

  5. buy tickets at the station as you need them.  trains in Italy are cheap
