Question:

Questions About Jaw Correction?

by  |  earlier

I had have my braces for about 4 years, I got them taken out late November. I have an under bite, do I have to get braces again for jaw correction? What are the pre-surgery procedures that they do? Would I need braces after the surgery? I have all my wisdom teeth out and my teeth are straight.

Sorry for all the questions ! Just curious =)

  1. My daughter had an underbite and she had jaw surgery in 2005. She needed her braces on for the jaw surgery. The surgeon actually used her braces to hold a splint that went over her upper teeth by wiring it to the teeth and not through the gums. The surgeon put heavy rubber bands on her teeth so he didn't have to wire her shut. Being wired shut often was through the gums but more and more they are just using the brackets already on the teeth. If you write to me I can share more and also her before and after pictures. If your teeth are straight the question would be are they where they need to be in order for your jaw to be corrected with surgery? Sometimes that is not the same thing.

  2. Presurgical orthodontics or reverse orthodontics as it is known accentuates the malocclusion or in simpler terms it removes the compensations nature has provided or if u have undergone a camouflage tretmant b4. If u have already undergone extractions as a part of ur prior treatment the question arises wat was the prior treatment done for camouflage? If so then decompensation/presurgical preparation becums much more complicated. Yeah u need to continue wearing the braces after surgery for minimum 4 months. It cud be longer depending on the status of ur occlusion. IM me for any advise im a orthodontist

  3. Yes, braces will be needed. They are used to stabilize your jaw after surgery. Heavy elastics are used now, over the jaw being wired shut. The elastics are secured over brackets on specific teeth.

As far as what is done pre-surgically, it can vary from one surgeon to the next. Ones I have worked with will generally do a full x-ray evaluation of your teeth and skull, take study models of your teeth and some other measurements that will help determine the end result. Some will even use a certain piece of softwear that can do a computer enhancement of the final result and show it to you. Very cool stuff!

The final appointment before surgery will usually be to answer any questions that you or your family may have, to sign consent forms and to give you all the post surgical information and give your time to review it and ask questions. You will learn to be very creative with a blender, as all your food for a couple months will need to be blended and drunk through a straw. You will probably get a booklet that has some recipe ideas in there.Good luck and this will be worth it in the long run!
