  1. I agree with the person above me, you should ask the person your leasing your horse from. It varies from person to person and from state to state. A half lease tipicaly means (at 2 of the 3 riding barns that I know leases horses)  that from a certain time a day, say 3:00 to 5:00 that horse is like yours and you are the only one who rides it. Outside these times the owner can use that horse in lessons or personal use. It can also mean certain days of the week rather than times. If you want to full lease a horse, then you get that horse for how ever many months you and the leaser agree on and you can take it to live somewhere else depending on the person, but after the aloted time you give it back to the owner.  I'm in my teens too and I've always wanted to lease a horse. You are lucky!!!

    Have fun!  =)

  2. These are typically questions to ask the person/barn you are leasing the horse from because they vary between the terms of the lease.

I half lease a thoroughbred gelding named Cappy. The half lease is 150 a month, and that includes 3 days with him a week (doing whatever) as well as being allowed to take him out for shows. I also take lessons with him, but I pay the trainer for that-not the barn (who I pay to lease him). So technically, 4 days a week with him.

The price of the lease also varies. Some people require you provide your own tack and supplies while you lease their horse, others do not. Some places constitute a half lease as 2 days, others may consider it 4 days. It depends.

  3. 1) You'll need to know only fairly basic things for the lease. If you've been riding three years you should be okay. Are you actually doing the lease? Or are just asking about it? I recommend leasing from the barn you ride at if that would be possible. That way any questions you have can be answered easily. You'll need to be able to ride competently by yourself, as most of the time you ride you won't be in a lesson. I would assume you can tack up and groom, ect. But make sure you talk to the person you lease with- every lease is different.

    2) Half leases can vary greatly. For the this and the next one, I'll just tell you what I do. The woman I lease with is amazingly kiind. I actually lease two horses, Star and Rox. She owns both of them. I can ride 3-4 days a week, pretty much as long as I want, with the horses well being in mind obviously. As long as I don't interfere with the lesson schedule. Also, (this isn't in the lease obviously) I get sort of respect around the barn, as "owning" them. Besides riding, I can do (again, as long as they have no lessons) pretty much anything I want with them. Last, I get "dibs" on them for shows and get to ride them for shows.

    3) I pay $300 a month.

    4) I think I covered everything! Enjoy the lease! Hope I helped!
