Question:

Questions For Home Architects Only...?

I really want to design upscale homes (and own my own firm), and here's my questions for home architects: Do you love your job? What don't you love about your job? Do you think it's the right career path for a creative person who loves art, drawing, architecture and is fascinated by the designs of houses?

  1. It's going to be a rough road to get there, but it's going to be worth it since it's a passion.  The worst part about this job is the business side and having to deal with different personalities of employees and what they "want".  As far as the "right" career path for a "creative person who loves art, drawing, architecture and is fascinated by the designs of houses", it really depends.  For one thing, almost ALL pre-architectural students believe they are creative and will own their own firms some day.  The majority of these students either drop out or can't get into the program.  Of those who manage to graduate, only 5-10% of them will do design work.  Some creative people are better suited for art than architecture.  I've interviewed so many candidates that truly believe that they are creative when their ability is mediocre at best.  You shouldn't have to tell anyone how good you are, you let them tell you.  If you have to tell people, then you're not as good as you think.  I believe that it is more important to be analytical and inquisitive in this field.
