Question:

Questions about Gerbils?

I'm thinking of becoming a Gerbil breeder. I am soon getting four beautiful female Gerbils. One is black with a white nose, one and is nutmeg and the rest are honey colored. I am 12 years old, done so much research about breeding Gerbils and Gerbil care. I wouldn't breed for the money, I would breed for the hobby and the experiance. Oh yah another question for Gerbil breeders, have you ever seen a full black Gerbil with a little spot on the nose? It is very beautiful and if it is rare I would definietly think of breeding. These are my plans:

I would start with 1 male, I would breed him to the black one I would then keep a male for the male I already have and for breeding. I would sell or give away my Gerbils for a small price. If all my Gerbils didn't sell I wouldn't breed.

Is that a good plan? We are moving soon to a bigger home, so I will probably wait then to start breeding. In the mean time I will get to know my new Gerbils (I'm getting then very soon!)

Thanks in advance!

  1. Dear Gerbil Breeding Inquirer,

Yes, that sounds like a plan. When you bring people in your house to look at the gerbils, they want to see a clean and healthy environment before they buy it.

Somehow, they expect more of a breeder than a pet store. You should make sure that the gerbils are in a semi large area, that way, it looks and feels like the gerbils are in a royal palace!

    Good luck,

  2. I also have a black gerbil and he has a white spot on his nose and paws. it's very cute, but i don't think it's rare.

I really don't think you should breed, as it shortens the female's life and also do you have cages for all of these gerbils? Like if they don't get sold and they won't get along wiht your other gerbils? You need to be careful that dad doesn't breed with daughters, daughters don't breed with sons, and sons don't breed with mom. If you are going to do this, then just be prepared for every worst case scenario, and learn EVERYTHING possible about breeding gerbils.

However, you do realize, there are millions of gerbils in shelters waiting to go to good homes, there's no real reason you should breed them.

Anywya, good luck, with you gerbils!

  3. Hi,

I am thirteen, and I am a gerbil breeder.  The thing is, we had over a dozen litters, and then we seperated them... they just kept having more and more!!!  I don't think it shortens a females life, as ours is a VERY old gerbil, and has had to many litters to count!

If you have a high demand for gerbils in your area then it would be a good idea, but I would make sure the pet stores aren't already over-crowded with them first.  Have fun!
