Yeah, so I know I should've asked earlier but I couldn't find the time lol

So I'm heading out to Japan tomorrow night and I want to know some things..like..

What should I avoid in Tokyo? Like the food, shopping, etc. I hear the brand names there are more expensive than the states.

What should I wear to Mount Fuji? Are flats, long sleeve hoodie, shorts alright? What is a must do/should I avoid there?

What's the weather in Osaka & Kyoto like?

  1. There are ALWAYS ways to be thrifty in Japan. I spent two weeks in Tokyo on less than 5 USD a lunch; with so many ramen-ya and vending machines it's easy to save on food. The most expensive thing will probably be train fares-- it can cost a good 15 USD to get from the suburbs of Tokyo to Shinjuku and back. I don't think there's any way you can still get a JR pass (you need to buy it before you arrive) but it's something to keep in mind for next time.

p.s. fruit and produce can be a lot more expensive there than in the US, but there are always certain markets that will give you a bargain.

  2. Mount Fuji is a real mountain, not just a stroll in the park!  Hiking shoes or at least sturdy sneakers are a must.

As for the weather in Osaka/Kyoto, right now it`s too d**n hot and humid.  Lately it`s been cooling off a bit later in the evenings, but in the daytime whenever I go out I`m almost instantly sweaty and gross.  Yuck!

  3. Q1: Tokyo is a huge sprawling city, like NYC. . .except safer and cleaner.  So what to avoid. . .anything that is illegal. Gangsters, gambling, drugs!

Before you go in a restaurant, ask to look at the menu first to check prices. It might be more expensive than you think.

Q2: Have you gone on a hardcore hike in the US? Same deal. The clothing sounds okay, depends on whether you'll spend the night at the summit or not. I would wear athletic shoes or hiking boots. Fuji is a volcanic mountain and the earth is nothing but crumbly volcanic rock (think of hiking on the moon). So you'll need to be able to get a firm foothold. Also take sunscreen and sunglasses to Mt Fuji, even if it is cloudy. Must: take photos, buy souvenir. Avoid: falling off the edge of a cliff, getting sunburned, getting dehydrated, getting lost!!

Q3: Same as Tokyo at this time of year. Of course it might be sunny in Tokyo, rainy in Kyoto, who knows. But temp-wise there's won't be a huge difference.

Some might say Kyoto is steamier, on the other hand, there are more paved surfaces in Tokyo, so that raises the temp.

  4. In Tokyo if you dont want to spend alot then avoid Ginza and Shibuya District.
