Questions about Military Officer programs, competitive packet odds/help?

Since I was little I had always wanted to become a helicopter pilot, specifically would like to fly a medivac or a lifeflight helicopter. As I am getting older (family wise) and have a 3 year old son and a wife I need to worry about the dream has just been put on the back burner's and never seems like it would become a reality. My wife and I are both currently in college but I have been thinking more and more about joining the Military and trying to reach my dream of finally becoming a pilot.

Does anyone know how good of odds I would have getting into the military OCC, OTS or any of the Officer candidacy programs with a BS in Anthro - Archaeology? Also which branches would I have the best shot in to become a medivac or lifeflight pilot in? I still have two years left and my current GPA is 2.92, but by the time I graduate I should have raised my GPA to a 3.2 or higher. I don't really have a competitive packet as I have either worked to support my family or just been with my family so I have little to know extracurricular activities I have done. The last real thing I have done was been a Junior Volunteer Firefighter in 2003 for a year before I moved and received some certificates for wildland training, and a few other certificates for dealing with the containment of meth labs and such. Everyone of my previous employer's would recommend me highly as I am a very hard and dedicated worker, but I still don't think this would be enough to help get me into the Officer candidacy programs to become a helicopter pilot.

Does anyone know of anything I could do that would really benefit me to try and get a more specialized competitive packet aimed for becoming a Helicopter pilot?

Thanks for all the help, time and effort!

  1. There are many avenues you can take.  The best way for you at this point in your life would probably be to find an officer recruiter for the branch of military you like best.  The Navy has a good program as well as the Army.  I do not know much about the Marines nor Air Farce.

There are two year as well as four year ROTC programs you could qualify for.  The negative thing is I know of no branch that will gaurantee chopper school.  Depending on how much you want to fly you might be willing to look into the enlisted Helicopter pilot warrent officer program the Navy offers.

  2. If you want to ensure that you will become a pilot doing what you listed, you need to become a warrant officer in the Army. They have programs where you sign up to go to basic and then straight to warrant officer school. Your odds are pretty good. You will have to pass a flight physical before entering and as long as you do that and are accepted, you can join. Call a recruiter and ask about it...if they don't know much, get another recruiter.
