Questions about Montego Bay, Jamaica?

I was wondering, when I went on my cruise to Grand Cayman, a lot of the stores gave out stones, like opals different ones. Do they do that in Jamaica? Also, what are some fun things that we can do in and around Montego Bay that is free. Is there anything? I was also wondering about the waterfalls there, I want to see those, I know about the big one is the city that started with an "O", I can't remember what it's called. Are there any others that we can find by going off into the woods. Also what is the cheapest and most dependable car rental company there?

Any info you have would be great, I leave in 2 weeks for my honeymoon there and will be there for 5 days, and do to so medical problems that can up when my son was born premature, we are not going to have a lot of money to go with, so I would love to be able to have a list of things that we can do that are free or very cheap.

Thank you so much for your time!

  1. Be very careful in Jamacia, there is a lot of poverty and desperation as a result. I would read up. For example last October a group from a cruise line {carnival l think} was attacked on one of the plantation wagon rides as part of a pre-paid, pre-registered excusion to see the entire farm..several people wher attacked and assualted and held at gunpoint, and a children where traumatized from the experience, wallets and jewelry was taken.

be very cautious on all islands, I woudl say the Grand Caymans is the nicest, and Jamacia one of those places to keep your wallet close and stay on the beaten path on registered tours. And make sure you have insurance, you don't want to get stuck in a Jamacian Hospital.  The beggers on the street have pimps and have to pay for those spots.

  2. North, would love to see the article telling about the group of tourists that were robbed....sounds like a tale, or something that happened somewhere else & your confused. Just sounds HIGHLY UNLIKELY despite the crime rate. Tourists are generally NOT messed with & more so in a group setting.

But to answer the question, theres very very few things for "free" in Jamaica, to include any stones. As the other answer was given, there is MarguritaVille, but you pay for the daytime entertainment, you pay for most "safe" beaches, and the falls in Ocho Rios, you'll pay there too ( by the way, its not located on the other side of the island, but it is an hour drive away from Montego Bay ). There are no cheap cars to rent...most all of them are at $50 per day and up, with a $1500 deposit required either cash or enough to cover on a credit card. Check the car out ENTIRELY, as they like to charge for ANY damage, even if you didn't cause it ( take pics of the entire car, or do a video clip for proof upon return ). Know that you'll be driving on the right side of the car & on the left side of the road. My suggestion: Hire a driver while your there.

  3. I have been to Montego Bay, the Falls are located in Ocho Rios on the other side of the Island.  We have never rented a car while we were there, we always hired a driver.  Appleton Rum is made there, Margaritaville is a must, everyone has to have a cheeseburger in paradise, and the Rose Hall is a must see or atleast ask the locals about the story.  Be forwarned, Montego Bay and the Cayman's are nothing alike.  When I was in the Cayman's I wasn't solicted at all, in Jamaica peddlers are constantly after your money.  (It's a poor country, and the tourist are big buisness)

  4. Montego Bay is the friendly city of Jamaica and we treat our visitors like our own.

Contrary to what members said about this beautiful city,Montego Bay is the number one tourist destination in the caribbean and it boast the most 5 stars hotels and golf courses in the island.

There are many free sceneries for you, including the Sam Sharp square and Civic center area. The Hip strip is a lively place for you where you can enjoy three free beaches with the locals and other visitors or you can pay a small fee and visit both the Aqua Sol beach park (US$2-3) and the world renowned Doctor Cave beach (US$5-$8).

If you are into partying then there are a few spot that you can visit for free- Street parties on Sunday,Wednesday and Thursday in and around the city. There are a lot of community bike shows that offer music and fashion entertainment as well.

There is a big Casino and games building on the hipstrip where you can take the family and playt children games or gamble at one of the many casinos slot machines.

Churches and more churches...This is free to attend and you are welcome to any and all of the churches in the city. In fact you can just ask a local and they will invite you to their church----Now that is a friendly city.

To my Cayman counterparts, we do not rob people or harrass our guests because we are educated and we know the importance of them visiting our country. We know you are envious of our stance in the global market as a premier location but do not worry we are willing to send more Jamaicans to your country to build some sense of acceptance and pride as black people. That is it, we are Jamaican and we are very proud of who we are and what we stands for.

Montego Bay has many more hot spot however the number one resourceis its people. They are not robots and they are understandable, courteous and very helpful. Enjoy your honeymoon in paradise my dear.

  5. Your best bet is to enjoy the resort beach.  When you venture out, people will constantly pester you.  Don't rent a car!!!  Besides driving on the left side, the roads are narrow, full of potholes and buses don't slow down.  If you want to see sites rent a driver for the day, take taxis or ask the resort about tours.  Montego Bay doesn't have what I'd call a "downtown".  Of course, MoBay isn't my favorite Jamaicamon city either.  Enjoy the honeymoon.  Congrats.
