I was just wondering if anyone knew any websites about adopting a baby from another country? The main things I am wondering are what qualifications do I have to have or you know like age income things like that?? And any other stories or information would be appreciated!!

If anyone cares or if this helps! I am young (20) and I'm married we are u.s. citizens and my husband is in the military! We just recently found out that my husband is unable to have children so we are considering this I always thought I would have a big family because I grew up with 8 brothers and sisters!! I wanna adopt children from the u.s. but for my first child I really wanna adopt a child from a different country! Preferably a child from a more poverty stricken country!!! Well thats all I can think to write so if you have any help I would really appreciate it!

  1. I would just adopt from ur own country you dont want one thats the wrong colour it may make ur husband feel inferior. or just get banged up while he is away in the military and tell him the doctors were wrong or it is a miracle. good luck..

  2. For international adoption it is usually easiest to go through an adoption agency.  The major factors they look at is income, age, and of course your ability to care for the child.  I have heard depending on what agency you go through they also factor in how long you have been married.  Mostly there will be a lot of paperwork and looking into your medical, psychiatric, and criminal history.  I would definitely recommend you look into credible agencies and ask the questions you have as it varies from agency and country.

  3. I just want to say there is nothing unethical about adopting a orphan and giving them a chance at having a loving family!

  4. As an adoptee and adoptive mother I have a wonderful website to recommend...www.adoptive-parenting.com LOTS and LOTS of information about transracial and international adoption, including links to other families who have adopted. The most popular country to adopt from (as a US Citizen) is Ethiopia (the numbers of children adopted have increased dramatically the past several years.. http://www.adoptive-parenting.com

  5. Right now you're too young to adopt internationally. Most countries require you to be at least 25, if not older. (IE: China requires you to be 30.) So, you have lots of time to do your research! Take a look at the Child and Family Services website for your state. They should have an adoption section, and there will be info on international adoption there. Also, look up registered adoption agencies for your state. Adoption Weekly Magazine also has lots of good info.

Good luck! We're also going to be adopting internationally within the next few years.

  6. Here is a very useful resource:

    Begin with the overview:

    Then compare country programs:

If you want to proceed right away, be sure to look at age requirements. Once you identify a couple of programs that interest you, set up a meeting with a local agency to discuss your plans. Often they have general monthly meetings that introduce all of their programs. Sometimes your social worker or agency will find that you are a better match for a program that hadn't jumped out at your initially.

    Best of luck to you!

And now the answer to your questions:

Who is eligible to file an orphan petition?

A married U.S. citizen and spouse (no special age) or an unmarried U.S. citizen at least 25 years of age may file an orphan petition. The spouse does not need to be a U.S. citizen; however, the spouse must be here legally if living in the United States. To make the adoption process faster, you may apply for advanced processing before you actually find an orphan to adopt. An application for advance processing may be filed by anyone eligible to file an orphan petition. An unmarried U.S. citizen may file an application for advance processing if the U.S. citizen is at least 24 years of age and will be at least 25 when an orphan petition is filed on behalf of an actual child and when the child is adopted.

  8. There are so many places to call. Start with the adoption agencies in your phone book. The rules will depend on the country and the agency. Some have weight restrictions for the parents- to- be. For some others you must travel to pick up your baby, while still others will escort your baby to you.

You don't necessarily want to adopt from a poverty-stricken country. You can't change that by taking a baby away from its parents. Seek a country where the babies are well cared for and healthy, and the baby isn't wanted for some reason or another. In China there is a one- child policy, so any other children are adopted out. In some countries boys are a treasure and girls are adopted out.

Start with your phonebook or look on line. You will most likely have to work with an agency within your state. It's a lot of work. Don't think it's easy. Compared to most adoption processes, childbirth is a breeze.

And the process isn't at all inexpensive. A lot of people are a part of one baby being brought into a forever family.  Wishing you luck.

  9. Start by researching the real atrocities going on in the country and the lack of ethics in adoption.

    Unicef.org

Keep in mind what the adoption agencies say and advertise is just to get money from you.

  10. Hi there. Have a look at www.informedadoptions.com. It has a lot of information on different country programs as well as a ton of information and articles about choosing IA, raising internationally adopted children, health issues, transitioning and attachment, etc. If you register you can go on the forums and talk to adoptive parents who have adopted from many different countries including China, Russia, Guatemala, Ethiopia, India, Haiti, Taiwan, Korea, Vietnam, and more. I think for most countries you need to be 25-30 years old so you have some time to do a lot of research!
