  1. 1. Yes, wear ankle braces. Ankle injuries suck and are incredibly common.

    2. Nope, just keep your ankles safer, and sometimes give you more support for your muscles.

    3. Not at all, especially if you find the type of braces that work best for you.

    4. $10 for super cheap nylon compression braces, to $100/pr for Malleoloc, the ones I use (and recommend to all of my players/teammates). Out of all the braces I've used, they give me the most support and the most movement, including lateral movement, since the supports aren't on the direct sides of your ankles but offset. Also, they're lower than most and a flexible plastic with cross straps.

    5. Yes! Practice and tryouts. Stay safe!

  2. 1st um if u wear vans or converse u migh twant to use an ankle brace because those shoes do not hav eankle support

2nd they do and do not affect u i use them somestimes

3rd nope like i said before i will now affect u

4th about 15-20$ at like target or any drugs stores u can find then anywhere

5th sure boys and grils use then i have a friend named jearmy he plays on the girls volleyball team and uses on the give u good support and u may want to use sneakers for this sport......good luck....hope u do well and win ur games!!!!

  3. I have "Active Ankle T2", which was about $40 each.

I sprained my ankle during a pickup game when I went up for blocking, stayed at home for four months before going back to court. The doctor at the emergency care offered a brace that was really bulky and asked me to use it every time I play volleyball. I also bought another one (Miller as the brand name) at Wal-Mart for about $15-20. You can also find similar products at sports good store such as Sports Authority or Big5, at the range of $15-$50.

Wearing brace is kind of limiting your movement, especially during break-in time. It would never help you to "play better".

It did, in several occasions, helped me to prevent myself from getting injured again when I stepped on someone's foot after blocking a shot (some low-level players might step "under" frequently). It might help a little bit to be more aggressive knowing that you won't get injured again. If your boy had previous injury, Active Ankle is a good solution as it is light-weighted, and provides more flexibility than most other ankle braces.

To my opinion, you do not need ankle brace for try-outs. It won't make them look "professional" (for that purpose, knees pads would make them look more "experienced").

  4. ankle braces purpose is to support you ankle, so if you have a weak ankle and you fall and hurt it you won't hurt it or hurt it as badly. ankle braces are never a gaurintee cure or anything but they help some. personally i don't play with them becasue i don't need to and it would be another thing to add on. i found some in my area for aound 8 dollars but they aren't nice they're basically spandix for your ankles. but my team has some nice ones. they had to cost at least 25 if not more.... most likely they were more. so it depends on the quality/type of brace. you don't have to wear them at tryouts. it depends on what your coach does at tryouts and if you ankles are weak or not. thats about all i can think of. good luck at tryouts :)

  5. It is all a matter of opinion...

I play on a college volleyball team and my coach would rather have people wear ankle braces or have them get their ankles taped because he would rather have us out a week after rolling an ankle with an ankle brace on instead of being out 3-4 weeks if we rolled our ankle without wearing a brace.

Ankle braces do not help you play better.

They might seem weird to play with them until you get use to them.

Is it true that wearing a brace can weaken your muscles?

No. This is just another myth and this can be proved by making a simple calculation. An average sports enthusiast in the Netherlands is active in some kind of sport 3 to 4 times a week. During these activities, someone may put on an ankle brace to prevent new injuries. This does not mean that the ankle muscles are no longer used, however. During the rest of the week, away from the sport, the ankle muscles are stimulated enough – 168 hours, less hours of sleep, sport and sitting down – to prevent them getting weaker.

In addition, the braces are functional; movements not involving a risk are allowed to a high degree, so that muscles remain active.

I have had both active ankle braces and ASO ankle braces. both are about $50 each. I like the ASO because they are lace up and to me they seem less bulky.

You don't have to use them at you tryouts but if you feel you have weak ankles you might want to

  6. 1.  Only if you are prone to sprains, or if you are recovering from one.

    2.  No.  Actually, I find they hamper your mobility because they limit your range of motion.  They are used mostly for preventive measures, so players don't sprain their ankles.

    3.  Yes.  The lateral movement is tougher, and I also found it more difficult to lunge.

    4.  Depends on what you are getting.  A simple neoprene sleeve will run around $12.00.  An "Active Ankle" (or comparable) will cost around $30 or so.  Check out the volleyball sites/catalogs.  They are usually all about the same in cost.

    5.  Only if you are either recovering from or prone to sprains.
