Ok,

So I have a few questions about breeding parakeets...

1.) Can you breed two different aged birds?

2.) Do you even HAVE to breed them, or can the go... solo?

3.) All of a sudden my parakeet, Lola, is biting, and I think a little more info would help...

So I was going to Florida with my little sister on June 13, and staying for 10 days, (my mom was watching her for most of the time) and on the 16th threw 19th, my parents went camping and so Lola went to a family down the street, which was pre-arangged and she knew them, but they had two dogs, and when i came home on the 23rd, Lola was biting (still is) and sleeping on the top of one of her hanging perches (which is also the highest point in her cage) and still is.

I DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO!!!!!!!!!!!

Help and thank you in advance.

Peace out,

Amber

  1. My recommendation? Don't do it. Budgies are highly overpopulated and there are tons in shelters and rescues. Breeding is not a simple thing and should not be taken lightly.

As long as you don't provide anything like a nest box, they aren't likely to breed.

  2. 1) You can breed two different aged birds as long as one in not too old and the other not too young or vice versa. they also should be more than a year old to avoid them from being stressed easily and not taking care of the eggs.

    2) Parakeets are starting to get the same sort of rep as lovebirds. they do not need to be kept in pairs to be happy. they actually will bond better to you if there is no other bird but this is just an opinion. So they can go solo if you opt to unless u plan on breeding them

    3) Something might have scared her or it could be just that your not spending enough time with her. What do you feed her? Is she housed with another bird? I would recommend taking a little more time to spend with Lola at least 30 minutes or more day! this might stop the biting. also if she does bite. please don't make loud noises like OUCH or No! bc this will only reinforce the behavior. They learn oh if my biting can maker her do this maybe if i do it again she will make a loud noise again. when she does bite and it hurts calmly walk out of the room out of sight of the bird and then yell!:) i hope this helps and if u need more help like breeding info please let me know :) good luck
