ok I just moved to california and I know almost nothing about the history. And my teacher wont help me! so here I am stuck on a huge test and I don't understand it plz help me!

1. Why did the application for California statehood caused turmoil in Congress?

  1. Except for the first question, NONE of these questions are about California, in particular.  They are all events leading up to the American Civil War.

    Go back and read your history book, dear.

    However, a tidbit:  California caused a ruckus when it applied for statehood because, up until that time, in order to keep things somewhat even, states were admitted equally based on slavery or non-slavery.  California was a huge state, and, because of previous Mexican treaties and policies, it was a non-slavery state.  The Compromise of 1850, which attempted to define areas where slavery was allowed and disallowed, had to take the huge area of California into account in it's determination of slavery for the Texas/New Mexico area.
