  1. You earn 3 hours for most classes. That means they generally meet 3 hours each week. You will have shorter time in class, but are expected to spend more time studying than in high school. 4 or 5 classes each semester is considered a full load. I think it's at least 12 hours to be considered a full time student. However, you have to take more than 12 hours each semester in order to graduate in 4 years.

Colleges do get longer breaks than public schools. Journalism should be interesting if you like it. However, don't expect it to be easy. Professors like to challenge students or they feel like they aren't doing their job. Some feel like "the harder, the better."  Be prepared so start working on the first day. Pay attention to the Syllabus for each class, and don't ever lose it. Keep an agenda, be ready to take notes on the first day. Start studying immediately and you'll be fine.

  2. You do get longer breaks.  About a month for Christmas (i.e. December 15th to January 15th).

If you take two classes, you are taking six (6) hours [because each class, typically, is worth three (3) hours].  To be considered "full time," you would take 4 or 5 classes.

I don't know what journalism classes are like, specifically, but I would say that journalism is considered neither terribly hard nor terribly easy.  Sounds like an interesting major.  Good luck!
