Question:

Questions about corn and broccoli in my garden?

A couple of questions about my garden-

1. My corn is not taking off like I think it should. Other people's corn in town is substantially taller. As a reference point for how dry/humid the environment is- I live in northern WY. How many times a week, barring any thunderstorms, should I water? I water for 1 hour twice a week. It this too much or too little? Could this be the problem?

2. I planted 4 broccoli plants- they were about 3 inches tall when I planted them at the beginning of June. The plants have done well and are now about 2 feet tall. When can I expect to see some broccoli heads form?

  1. OK, first about the corn--there are many varieties of corn.  Some can be harvested in 60 days, others in 90 days.  Some corn grows four feet tall, others taller.  All corn are heavy feeders, meaning they need a lot of fertilizer to grow healthy.

(My Silver Queen sweet corn grew only four feet but after 70 days had sweet ears ready for harvest.)

Don't let the soil around corn dry out as they have shallow roots and when there's no water around the roots the corn wilts (droops).  In Wyoming in the dry heat I imagine you would need to water several times a week.

I use blood and bone meal around my corn as organic fertilizer.  Coffee grounds help, too.  (Grounds keep many bugs out)

As for the broccoli, it takes about 60 days for the plants to be harvested.
