Question:

Questions about getting Indiana drivers license?

I moved from Illinois to Indiana and wanted to get an Indiana licence. Do I just go to the DMV and take the written test? Will they make me retake the driving portion of the driving test? I also see online that there are License centers. Can I go to those, or do I have to go to the DMV

  1. Most States only require you to go to the DMV (or license center) and turn in your current license to get one for the new State. Some ask you to take a written test. Call the license center before going there since some do not have the camera for drivers licences.

  2. You can do this:

Go to google, and put "DMV Indiana" in there (without the quotes), then click on any one of the first three links. I clicked on the 2nd, http://www.dmv.org/in-indiana/department...

When I went there, I clicked on Drivers License, which took me to http://www.dmv.org/in-indiana/drivers-li...

Then, under "New, Renewals & Duplicates", I clicked on "Apply for New License", which takes me to http://www.dmv.org/in-indiana/apply-lice...

Then click on - New to the State - which goes to http://www.dmv.org/in-indiana/apply-lice...

Now we're getting somewhere. It says:

    New to the State

If you're new to Indiana, go to any license agency. Bring with you one document that provides proof of residency, and one that provides proof of your Social Security number.

Also, make sure to take one acceptable primary and one secondary document (or two primary documents) from the Bureau of Motor Vehicles list (below) of approved documents. Copies of documentation are not allowed.

If you already have a valid driver's license from your previous state, you will only need to pass the Indiana written and vision tests. If your old license has expired by more than 12 months, or if you never had one, you'll need to pass the driving test, too.

Also, if you're younger than 18, you'll need to have a parent or legal guardian with you to sign the financial responsibility section on the application and have it notarized.

The list of approved documents is at http://www.in.gov/bmv/files/idreq.pdf. It's got too much to copy in here.

    Good luck.

    Good luck.

  3. Most states put this info on their DMV's website, and some even have special sections for people moving from another state.  If you already have a license that was not provisional or temporary in any way then you might just have to fill out the application, get a photo taken and pay the fee.
