Question:

Questions about getting a cockatiel?

Ok, so im considering buying a cockatiel. I have done a lot of research on them. Here are my questions:

1. I read a website that, made it seem like its next to impossible to keep one happy and health. And made it seem like you have to be there every minute of the day. Is this true?

2. Im 15 and I go to school each day, will this depress the bird when no one is home from 7-4 pm?

3. I play the guitar, will this bother the bird?

4. Would it be a good idea to keep the bird in my room? (Taking consideration of my box fan that I turn on at night (i read that drafts can harm them is this true), my guitar, and t.v.

5. My mom smokes in the house, but if i keep my door shut, will it be ok, or will she have to smoke outside from now on?

6. My brother is getting one too, ( they will both be males), but will be in different rooms, if we put them together is this good for them, or will they fight, or company each other?

I know this is alot of questions, but I need help. I have read for hours and everyone is saying different things. I really want one of these birds, but I want it to live in a safe environment and be healthy. So thank you so much for those of you that go through all the trouble to help me out and answer this question.

  1. i have cockatiels and im 16. when i go to school from 4-3 i turn on the radio. birds like any kind of music, even guitars. just dont blast the speaker next to the cage. and i keep them in my room and leave the shade open for sunlight. i also have a sun-conure, and she loves a light breeze that comes through the window. its not a good idea to have a fan near the bird but a slight breeze wont harm your bird. as long as the bird isnt around the smoke it should be fine, just dont have smoke in your room, if thats where the bird is going to be. birds can be near each other, cockatiels are very social birds they love company so another bird should make your bird happier. even when you go to school you can put the birds in the same cage so they can bond. with them both being males you shouldnt have to worry about there being eggs.

  2. Hello there...

    1. Nope, cockatiels are just fine without being with people being around them 24 hours a day. Mine is left unattended frequently and stays happy and healthy.

2.. When I was gone at school my bird was just fine. Usually I left a radio on or the t.v. or something to that effect so that it wouldn't be too lonesome.

    3. The guitar will not bother your bird unless you are playing very loudly near him. If it is something a bit softer it will probably actually like it. :)

    4. As long as your fan is not directly on your bird, it should be just fine. Keep in mind that your bird really isn't as fragile as lots of websites make them out to be.

    5. If your door is shut I'd say your cockatiel will be just fine.

    6. My sister and I each have cockatiels, both males and when we put them together they were very happy. Sometimes they would bite at each other a bit, but it was never anything serious. We eventually put them in a cage together because they became very sad without each other and would call to each other from across the house. So I'd say that unless you want them together permanently, you should not put them together.

    Good luck! :)

  3. first of all if you happen to be someones who,s not home alot it is not a good Idea to leave the bird alone  but if you arent home and really want one like you said  keep the radio on for noise so the bird wont feel  so lonley  as for you 2nd question  no is is not good for the bird to be around even 2nd hand smoike even it is in your room so your mom or other smoker should smoke outdoors they are even more sensitive than humans are to it.as for the guitar  birds love music  so maybe you can get the bird to mimmic your guitar playing as well  but male kockatiels are noisier than females and if you have 2 males in the same house even if theyre in seperate rooms the 2 chiping together maybe too much noise and get pretty annoying after a while  so weigh all the pros and cons and if you sill want one  go for it they are good companions and also w/ the issue of the box fan  if you have it on  aim it away from the bird  but still cover the cage at night  with a light weight cover to protect it form the draft  cocateals like it warmer than cooler

  4. You should have no problem with keeping them in different rooms or around your mother's smoke and your room won't be drafty to your bird if the wind isn't blowing directly on the bird. With 2 males they will call out to each other all the time in different rooms and whistle back to each other too. You will do fine I suggest playing it by ear and go with the flow and you and the birds will all be fine. I also suggest you search high and low for a breeder who hand feeds their birds and get 2 hand tamed ones because getting males who are wild are not going to want you or your brother to put your hands on them ever. So keep that in mind when looking to buy the 2. And remember males will not have any grey on their faces and will always have solid colored tail feathers.
