Question:

Questions about gravel for driveway and garden walkways?

I need to re-gravel my driveway, most of the gravel has washed away over the past 4-5 years.

My driveway is probably about 300 foot long.

*Any idea how much gravel I will need?

*How much gravel is 1 ton, I mean, how much area does it cover?

*How much gravel can be transported in an average size pickup truck - is it equal to a ton, or?

*What is the cheapest gravel?

*How thick/deep does it have to be laid down?

*What should I do to prepare the driveway, before the gravel arrives?

  1. get it delivered by professionals or you will have a full time job delivering to yourself for a few weeks and do some damage to your suspension, rent a bob cat or similar to

    save your back

places I deal with sell by the cubic yard and any place should be able to convert if they sell by the ton. they also help you know what you need

gravel of different types can take up different space by weight due to different compaction characterisitics caused by shape differences

typically six  inches of gravel is OK for a driveway, if drive way is 12 feet wide, 300 feet long and you add 6 inches over length then you need 66 cubic yards:

    1 cubic yard = 27 cubic feet (3X3X3)

driveway detalis mentioned above: 12 feet X 300 feet X 0.5 feet = 1800 cubic feet ( for other widths just substitue and multiply)

    1800/27 = 67 cubic yards

if you can compact the ground in your driveway before hand it will take longer for the gravel to get squished into it.

if you can afford consider black top, because it spreads weight out over gravel and prevents water infiltration so will give considerably longer life to your drive, another option is stone dust which can be put on top of gravel and wil compact to a nearly water proof cover

  2. go to a stockist for gravel  with the questions you ask here. they will be able to work out how much you need for that length and width of drive, the depth will be a matter of  choice  but they will suggest  one.

they will also tel lyou the cheapest they stock.

the weight will vary according to size of chips and  material of the gravel chips. again you really need to ask the supplier. delivery would probably be best by them by truck or you will be making a lot of trips in a pickup and work  emptying it out. they can have it delivered in a bag normally  and off loaded where you want it.
