Questions about growing watermelon in Michigan?

I have a single watermelon plant in my garden and I need to know if I am growing it correctly.

How big should the watermelon be this time of year? I have one about the size of a pebble.

Should I pinch of any other watermelons and let just one of them grow? Does that help the one watermelon grow faster?

My watermelons keep spliting on the bottom. They are about the size of a soccer ball when this happen. What should I do and what causes this to happen.

7-22-2010 My watermelon is the size of a canalope or mustmelon how will i know when to pick it? This is my first garden so I'm not sure when to pick my vegtables.Muskegon Michigan. Thank you Kay p.s. I planted everything a few days after Memorial Day
