Questions about hatching/raising quail.

I am new to hatching anything, and I'm going to hatch 4 quail. I don't want an expensive incubator. In fact I want it as cheap as possible. Can't I make a make-shift incubator out of a 60 watt lightbulb and a metal lamp-like-thing to diredct the light straight downward? Or if a heating lamp is cheap, I can just get that =P How much would one be? (Hot enought to hatch a quail egg)

What food do quail eat? Where can I get it? How much is it?

Is nutrient-filled water required or anything like that? (hey, you never know)

Cage? Would a ten-gallon aquarium work? Or bigger?

I'd really appreciate it if one of you could give me a quick summary of the general of hatching/raising of small birds like everyhing I discussed above: Feeding/hatching all that.

As I always say, all help is appreciated!

Thanks!

  1. Is it like your new hobby or something? Or you just want to start something new?

OK. so lets get to your question(s)

Raising Quail is fun, interesting and profitable. But be aware, that it also can be costly, nothing but problems and very discouraging.

When raising Quail, you will have to incubate the eggs. It is very rare for Quail to hatch their eggs in captivity. Choosing the right brooding method to fit your situation is extremely important. Once your Quail eggs have become chicks. You do not want to lose them because of improper brooding techniques.

Brooding, is the ability to contain the Quail chicks in a controlled environment. With proper heat, food, water, space and air. Raising Quail chicks requires all of these components to come together properly until your Quail chicks completely feather out.

Incubators are a necessity for hatching out chickens and other poultry when you want to keep them safe from predators. Or if you're just starting out - ordering hatching eggs is a wonderful way to start your flock. We list almost every breed of chicken, turkey, pheasant, quail, even emu hatching eggs and peacock hatching eggs when in season.

  2. Try a "Feed and Seed" store for more information or google "raising quail" I am sure there has got to be some info out there. My grandparents had quail hatch from eggs that they incubated... I was really little so I don't remember that much about it... I know Gram ordered the eggs from a mail order catalog. They lived on a farm so they already had an incubator. Try some "Teacher" like sites for teaching science. Many classrooms incubate eggs... I have done chickens and ducks but no info on quails per say... hope this helps some though. Search on Google/yahoo for :Quail Eggs and Incubation
