1st off. I've had green anole's before so i know a bit about them. really all i need to know is 2-3 things.

the first ~ i woke up this morning and went downstairs. I have 1 brown anole. I got her from Florida. It was an accident.. my grandparents drove up from Florida, and she hitchhiked in their car. I live in NJ. now here's my ques. when i got up, i went 2 check on her and feed her. and i saw something in the cage.i figured eh maybe i missed a cricket when i took them out yesterday.

well much to my surprise, there was baby brown anole in the cage. she's barely an inch long. now my question is how the heck did the mother get pregnant! she hasn't been with any other anoles since before April. I am soooooooo confused.

next question. should i separate mom and baby? i dont want her to like eat the baby.....lol

  1. First of all, female lizards can retain sperm for quite a while, usually up to 3 months. She probably got knocked up by some random lizard in florida...lol

the mother will not eat the baby; atleast not on purpose. Reptiles don't have the best eyesight, so she can mistake the baby for a cricket. Go ahead and separate them just in case; atleast until the baby is almost the size of its mom. Good luck with the new addition! baby herps are super cute! Also be prepared to feed it little teeny crickets; you wouldn't want the little guy to choke.

  2. Definitely separate!  Here is a good site to read:

  3. the mother can retain sperm from a male anole so they could have been breeding last year.  also they take about 3 months for the babies to develop in the mother so it could have been pregnant all this time.  separate them.  the mother will eat the baby.
