so like i'm reading these somewhat funny quotes from a bunch of websites, and i keep coming across things like:

"I (emailed with) James Murphy. He is an excellent human being and is very smart. His music gets to my good nerve."--Anthony Kiedis

So what's with the (emailed with), isn't that a important phrase? i thought the parentheses meant that it wasn't said, it is just added information. But that's information needed to be said. what's up with that?!?!?!?! I James Murphy can't possibly make sense because he e-mailed James. HELP??!!

Here are some other examples:

"Unprofessionalism and under-production are the two pillars on which (we) are built."--Tim Harrington

"People on 'Arrested Development' are the highest order of celebrity to me. [Michael Cera] emailed me something like, 'I think you're one of the coolest cats on Gmail.'" --Britt Daniel

  1. replacing a word or phrase with a clarifying word or phrase does require brackets, as in the fourth example. the parentheses in the other examples are being used the same way, but should be brackets so that everyone understands the purpose.

  2. The parentheses mean that something else was said, but the words in parentheses were substituted to make it clearer.

"Do you see the person in the courtroom now?"

Literal answer:  Yes, that guy sitting there.

    Edited answer:  Yes (the Defendant).
