Question:

Questions about rechargeable batteries (AA & AA)

I bought an Energizer AA, AAA battery recharger (simple 4 slot, $11.00) over the weekend, and I bought 2 packs of Raovac AA rechargeable batteries to use with it (should work). How long does one of these types of chargers take to charge 4 AA batteries?

And, should I have just spent the extra $20.00 and bought the 15 minute recharger?

Thanks.

  1. No need to spend extra $$ on a 15-minute recharger unless you really NEED new batteries constantly.  Maybe for a pro photographer, etc, but a regular charger works great for most people.

  2. 2.5 hours at most, the 15 minute charger does come in handy

  3. -- CHARGE TIME --

It should take a max of 3 hours to charge. When the charge cycle is complete the charger will either shut off or go into trickle-charge mode.

    -- 15 MIN CHARGER --

Whether or not you should have bought it depends on the type of rechargeables you purchased. Out of all the available rechargeables only NiCad batteries can handle the charging amperage of a 15 min charge. NiMH can not be charged that quickly without getting very hot or damaged. Before you charge the batteries check to see what type you have and compare that to the battery type your charger handles. You don't want to charge an NiMH battery in a charger designed only for NiCads.

    -- MY EXPERIENCE --

I fly electric model planes. I've used both NiMH and NiCads. NiMH batteries will always take longer to charge because they can't be charged at the same rates as a NiCad. The charge rate for an NiMH is equal to its capacity while a NiCad's charge rate can exceed its capacity by 2.5x.

  4. Most chargers discharge the battery 1st then recharge, this helps with the life of the battery. I have always just charged them overnight. I think it takes about 8 hours, but I'm not sure.
