Questions about selling on Ebay??

I buy off of ebay and have never thought of selling until I seen some things the other day to sell. How are these people making a profit though? Are they buying these things brand new and then putting them on ebay? Im really confused. For example, coach purses. They sell for ALOT I have noticed. But they also cost ALOT to buy brand new. How are these people actually gaining a profit selling brand new things? It seems impossible! I have also noticed alot of really nice things that never sell!! That is insane. Is ebay just a waste of time for alot of sellers?

It's sad but true that most of the brand name fashion items you see on eBay are really cheap knockoffs that the seller purchases in bulk from Chinese retailers. There are scammers on eBay just like there are anywhere else. eBay tries to keep these people away but it's like the Project Payday scammers on Yahoo Answers -- there's just too many of them and they keep coming back under new names.

eBay's definitely not a waste of time if you know what you're selling and know there's a market for it. My kids at various times have kept themselves in spending money selling used sports equipment and sweatshirts, and I make a few bucks myself selling books related to some of my hobbies. It's possible to make good money on eBay -- just don't go into it expecting to become rich.

If it is auction rather than buy it now, popular demand for the item can tend to raise the price higher than the original retail price, as people scramble to get the item before it ends. Freight/Insurance can also add a small profit to the total payment as well.

Buy it now tends to be priced a little higher due to those who wish to purchase the item straight away rather than fight over it with someone else in an auction bid, so some customers wont mind paying a little extra just to know that the item is theres - and they will have it a little quicker too.
