If my fiance joins the Reserves after having left Active Duty 3 1/2 years ago, will he get a bonus? He will have to get a new MOS, his (13P) doesn't exist anymore. While he is in AIT, will he get BAH to cover his house payment (we are not married)? Can he join and have 2 years of non-deployable time? What MOS's have a short AIT time? Can he sleep at home on the one weekend of training a month if the unit isn't far away?

  1. He might qualify for a bonus depending on the MOS he takes.  As far as, other stuff you might want to ask the recuiter so you wont get negative answers as it is better to hear it from the horses mouth as some call it...

  2. That's a whole lot of questions.  Since he has been out of the service for over 2 years, he will have to renew his MOS.  If he goes over 4 years, he will have to redo basic training.  He will not get BAH for his time spent in AIT, as he is not married and they will be providing him with proper housing.  I know there is a 1 year non-deployable "trial period" available to active duty going reserves, but 2 years sounds like a little much.  Any combat arms will have a shorter AIT compared to a technical MOS, like Signal Corps.  Depending on where he goes to AIT at, he may be able to be housed with the prior service members and can avoid the drama of the Drill Sergeants.  Not sure about his weekend drills.  I see no reason as to why he couldn't, but then again I never spent time in the reserves.

  4. He more than likely wont get a bonus, he wont get bah unless he has dependants, they are not signing contracts saying that they will not deploy anyone, 42A has a short AIT and he cant sleep at home
