A Grande Ecole is a prestigious establishment of higher learning, not a secondary school.

  2. The French Education System is like this :

(Here is only the main path, many other options are possible but too complicate to explain them here)

Ecole maternelle (3 years from 3 to 5 yo)

    - 1st year

    - 2nd year

    - 3rd year

Ecole primaire (5 years from 6 to 10 yo)

    - CP (Cours Préparatoire)

    - CE1 (Cours Elementaire 1ère année)

    - CE2 (Cours Elementaire 2ème année)

    - CM1 (Cours Elementaire 1ère année)

    - CME2 (Cours Elementaire 2ème année)

Collège (4 years from 11 to 15 yo)

    6ème

    5ème

    4ème

    3ème

Lycée (3 years from 16 to 18 yo)

    2nde

1ère (In 1ère class, you have to choose a path : scientific, economic, literary...)

    Terminale --> Baccalauréat

After the High School Degree (French Baccalauréat) you have 3 possibilities :

    - BTS (Brevet de Technicien Supérieur) in 2 years

    - University in 5 years

           - old system : DEUG (2y), Licence (1y), Maîtrise (1y) and finally (1y) DESS (if you want to work next) or DEA (if you want to try for a PhD next)

           - new system (Bologna) : Bachelor (3y),  Master (2y) French Universities are very selective for the last year of Master (formerly DESS or DEA).

    - Grandes Ecoles in 5 years

           - 2 years in a special High School to get ready for the national exam (those special High Schools are very selective if you want to be in a good one)

           - 3 years in a Grande Ecole (The best you were at the national exam, the best your Grande Ecole is)
