Question:

Questions about the Group B Strep test?

I was tested last week at 36 weeks and the test came back positive. I spoke with the nurse briefly, she basically just told me not to have the baby at home and if my water breaks to get to the hospital ASAP. I'm a little worried, I'm 37 w, 1d and I'm already at 5cm dilated. I don't have another Dr.'s appointment until Thursday and I'm afraid of not making it to the hospital. Should I be worried?

  1. Well strep can cause baby to seizure after birth so I'd say your worries are meritted. Maybe you should talk to your doctor and let him know how worried you are. I went from 4 to 10 cms in 15 minutes, so I can understand if you'd want to be induced, which is more painful, but for your baby it seems like the best option.

  2. i personally think you and your baby are ok. in my experience, 2nd and subsequent babies are pretty easy to deliver, i really don't think anything is wrong but i would really keep in touch with my doctor and monitor everything.

congrats on your new baby ♥

  3. Tell them you want to be induced then.  If your already 5cm then it should go fairly fast for you.  That way your at the hospital and no worries.  That's what I would do.

  4. Don't be worried.  I tested positive and my water broke.  They gave me an IV at the hospital and I had a healthy baby boy!  There is one thing no one told me before labor though and I wish they had - the antibiotics they administer can give you diarrhea.  Not really what you want when you are pushing.  TMI but I wish someone would have warned me!

  5. are you in labor? do you have the sensation of having to make a bowel movement but find that you cant cuz that is labor. if this is how your feeling call your dr tell them this and go to the hospital asap. strep B is just a bacteria that could infect your child if not given certain drops right at birth or something along those lines i had it with both pregnancies wasnt too worried.  If your worried that you wont make it to the hospital after your water breaks you will just tell you hubby to step on it lol or call an ambulance. you shouldnt feel the urge to push after your water breaks it usually takes a lil bit longer than 5 minutes maybe an hour. like i said before call your dr and talk to them about your concerns this is what they are paid for to help calm you down and explain that everything will be ok

  6. Well I don't know if you should be worried. I would just try and make sure you get to the hospital in time if you can. If for some reason you had your baby at home I would notify the hospital that you were positive so they can tend to the baby. It will all work out.

  7. I would say you are fine unless your water actually breaks - they know you are 5 cm dilated and if they were concerned they would have said something or planned something out with you.

I was also Group B Strep + with my first, and I am again this time. All they do is give you antibiotics during labor (or for me, if my water were to break before my planned c-section this time, they would give me antibiotics).

  8. GBS is really only an issue when your water is broken for more than four hours *and* when you have repeat cervical checks.  So start declining the cervical checks--you don't want to increase risk of infection.  You should also decline stripping of membranes and artificial rupture of your membranes.

A fast labor is ideal!  It means there is less of a chance for gBS to be introduced to your little one!

  9. Do not worry. If this is your first pregnancy labor will be slow. What happens is when you go into the hospital you will need to have antibiotics in an IV.

More than 25% of women are positive for Group B strep! VERY common

  10. I don't think you have anything to worry about. Have you had contractions? I'm surprised they haven't iduced you being 5 cm dilated. Talk to your doctor.
