Question:

Questions about the King in Chess?

If the King is in check, is it possible for the King to attack the attacking piece? More general: is the king allowed to attack ANY pieces? Also, when does a stalemate occur? Does it only occur when the king is the only player left on the board?

  1. Yes, he can attack the piece giving him check as long as doing so moves him out of check.

Yes, the king can attack any piece except the opposing king and queen because doing so would put him in check.

Stalemate occurs when there are no legal moves left, any moves put the king in check, but where the king is is not in check.

Stalemate most often occurs when only a king is left, but can happen if there are other pieces/pawns that can't move.  Usually blocked pawns, but a pinned piece is posible.

(off hand, the queen would be tough to immobilize, but I'm sure i could do it.)

    This may help

  2. The King can do anything that doesn't put him in check (he is, after all, the King!).

He therefore can't capture the opposing King, as merely coming within range of the piece would put himself in check. He can make ANY other move (whether it's attacking or not), that doesn't result in him putting himself in check.

A stalemate occurs when the player whose turn it is can not move without being in check, and yet is not actually in check as they are. They therefore have no legal moves, but have not been put in checkmate.

If my King wasn't in check, but I couldn't put him anywhere without moving him into check, and I couldn't make ANY other moves with ANY other pieces, then it's a stalemate.

If I had a pawn, for instance, and I could move it, then it's not a stalemate and the game continues. If I can't move the pawn, (e.g. if it's blocked by another piece) then it's a stalemate.

Usually in a stalemate, you just have a King. Maybe you'll have one or two pawns, but none of your pieces can be allowed to move. And you can't be in check as you are. That's a stalemate.

    So who won?

  3. Yes the king is allowed to attack the attacking peice as long as that move wouldn't put him back in check.

He can attack all other peices except the opposing king.

A stalemate occurs in any situation where a check mate is impossible.

    (As far as i know) ; )
