Questions about the US Coast Guard?

I'm thinking about joining the USCG and i have a few questions. The first is i don't have a HS diploma only a G.E.D. I hear the USCG accepts just a G.E.D. under special circumstances. Well what are those circumstances? Also after serving 20 years in the USCG can you retire like the you can in the Army? Final question in the USCG Reserves you only serve 2 days a month and 2 week a year how much pay would you get per month and how long can you serve in the USCG reserves?

  1. Well, good luck getting into the Coast Guard with a GED. I hear they don't really accept them. If you have any college credit, enough will even you out and you don't need a HS diploma. I would talk to a recruiter. You would def. need a high ASVAB score to counteract just having a GED.

In the USCG reserves as an E-1, you get like 300 dollars a month. I believe you have a 4 active and 4 year inactive committment.

  2. What are the qualifications to join the Coast Guard?

You must be a US citizen or a Resident Alien.

Be between the ages of 17-27 for Active Duty. (If you are 17, you'll need parental consent.)

Reservists must be between 17-39. Prior service personnel should contact their local recruiter for specific programs.

Have a high school diploma. GEDs are accepted in special circumstances.

Have no more than two dependents.

Pass the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) test.

Pass a military entrance medical exam.

Be the type of person who wants to serve the public on or around the water
