  1. The Conscription Law passed in 1948 (the Cold War Draft) required anyone drafted to serve 21 months in the service. LBJ increased the amount of draftees between 1962 to 1964 because of the need for troops due to the Vietnam War. There were many protest over the draft and it eventually was replace by the current law. You have to register when you turn 18, but for all practical purposes, no one is drafted and probably will never be drafted unless the "all volunteer" armed forces fail to meet the requirements to protect the nation.
