Question:

Questions about traveling Ireland in May?

A friend and I are traveling to Dublin and around Ireland in late May. We're very excited and starting our planning early. The subject of what to wear weighs heavily on our minds and my friend is planning on showing off her legs in shorts but I'm thinking it might be a bit nippy still. Also, I'm not sure how casual one should be in some of the smaller or formal places we might visit . . .I don't want to stick out like a typical tourist at first glance! Any hints from frequent visitors and natives?

Also, I'm looking for good tips for nice homey pubs to visit and places with oysters not too expensive!

Many thanks,

Michal

  1. As you probably know, the weather in Ireland is changeable and so you should be prepared for almost anything. Generally though, May is a fairly good month with pleasant weather and not too cold. As for what to wear for formal occasions, take the US as a marker. Wear what you would normally wear there to any occasion. One hint though, NO yellow or check/tartan trousers and absolutely NO green hats.

  2. well i thnk u shud bring a coat neway cuz it always rains bt if u hav a coat its fineit depends really i mean its prob goin 2 b kinda cold bt pack sum shorts neway cuz summer cums either late or early!!!

u shud go 2 the aran islands on the west coast of ireland i found inis oirr the smallest 1 the nicest lvly bech nd quite nd u can get a ferry 2 doolin co.clare from nd 2 ther i thnk it ws nly 30mins or so they hav nice pubs nd a lot of trad music!!

  3. It will probably be too cold for shorts. In order not to stand out refrain from Miller lite t-shirts, cut-offs with white socks and the like dress as if you were going out on a casual first date to Red Lobster or equivalant. The Temple bar area has the night life. And the absolute BEST oysters I ever had were at the Dublin airport!!

  4. The weather in Ireland is not very reliable so my main advice would be to be prepared for all possibilities. Generally, the weather is usually mild, if not warm at this time of the year, though it probably depends on what your used to! There is a possibility of rain too so I would pack lightweight rain wear, just to be safe. Trousers, t-shirts, jumpers and jackets are all a must but pack your shorts too, you might hit it lucky with the weather! Good walking shoes are another must as there is plenty of walking to do.

Where you are going at night will determine what you wear. Generally speaking, local pubs are casual (jeans and shirt), clubs and discos are glam ( a lot have a smart but casual dress code), restaurants vary depending on where they are and the people that eat there.

If your looking for weather info closer to the time check out the local weather on www.rte.ie/weather/index.html

    Good luck!
