Questions about wine...?

Last night I tried wine for the first time. I had R.H. Phillips Sauvignon Blanc Night Harvest 2006 and Turning Leaf Vineyards Chardonnay 2006. And all I could taste and smell was alcohol. Is this normal or did I just go for to cheap of a wine. I had to gulp it to get it down. I read so much about the enjoying the smell and taste of wine and how you could pick all these notes up. I would have rather just done shots.

  1. I have the "alcohol smell" problem with any white wine I have tried. I prefer a Merlot "which is a red". I would suggest trying a decent red wine before putting wine off completely. Spending $10 - 15$ should do it.

  2. you started with cheap wine.  i wouldn't include either of those wines in a "tasting" of fine wines.  they are mass produced, sweet, flavored wines.

as this was your first time, don't read too much into it.  it is certainly true that everyone has the capacity to smell a wide variety of flavors in wine, that refers to wine that is crafted to be enjoyed in such a manner.  the two you had were made for consistency and mass marketability.

you may find that it will take a lot of wines to find the ones you enjoy.  don't give up. it can be extremely enjoyable.  if you wish to experience wine, try thumbing through a magazine like Wine Spectator.  by a few bottles that they rate well (not all are available everywhere) and compare your tastes with their notes.  there are a good deal of nice wines under $10-$12.  when you try wines in the $15-20 range you will notice a marked difference.

my wife loves very expensive red wines, she can't drink cheap red wines.  i on the other hand, love a mid price red.  i don't really have discerning enough taste buds to truly enjoy the higher end reds.

    enjoy.

  3. sorry didn't got ya...!!!!!!!!!!!

actually it depends from person to person as all of us don't find a particular smell nice same is with d wine i suppose dis was Wat i asked......

  4. I suspect that what you smelled was wine.

Remember the first time you had coffee, or an olive or any other adult flavor and wondered why anyone would enjoy them?

Same with wine. But, hey, if you don't like it there's is no need to drink it.
