Questions about writing section on ACT?

is the writing portion optional?

if it is will UC's accept the ACT without the writing section completed?

and does the writing section affect the English scaled score?

im not sure because my friend got her ACT score back already i asked her what she got on her essay she sayd they didnt grade it yet. but she was able to get her score? so once they grade her essay will they change her score? or do you keep both scores one with essay and one with the essay? ?! im so confused please help,!!!

  1. The writing portion is optional. It does not affect the English score, it's all on its own. They will probably send her her essay score later, and it may change her score. And what is UC? Because some colleges require the writing portion, and some don't. I know I'm going to retake mine because I didn't take the writing this time, and University of Central Florida requires it. If by UC you mean University of California, then they do require the writing.  If you mean University of Cincinnatti, then they require it also. The college board website can help with any college, so if that's not the college you mean you can just type in another and find out from there. I've included the link for University of California Berkeley and Cincinnatti.
