  1. 1) You can run many Windows programs using the WINE emulator, but not all.

Switching to Linux generally means switching to using Linux programs too - there are tons of free open source programs that do the same thing as common Windows programs, for example The GIMP instead of Photoshop, and OpenOffice instead of MS Office.

WINE is really handy for the odd one or two Windows programs that don't have an equivalent in Linux, but frankly if you still plan to run ALL your Windows stuff, there's no point switching over to Linux - you may as well stick with Windows (or "dual boot" with Windows and use both).

    2) Ubuntu and most other Linux versions give you the option of using Compiz Fusion, which offers the same features as Vista's Aero interface and many more besides. Try out both Ubuntu and Kubuntu to see which look and feel you prefer. The install CD is a "Live CD", which means you can try out all of the features of the OS without having to install it on your hard drive.

    3) Depends on the printer but Ubuntu should have no problems with most common brands of printer (HP etc).

    4) Ubuntu recommends at least a 700MHz processor with 384MB RAM and you should have at least 4GB of free hard drive space.

    5) Yes, most linux versions are available in 32 bit and 64 bit versions. As with most other OS, driver and software support tends to be a bit patchier in the 64 bit versions, although this is improving.

  2. Most of these questions can be answered at Ubuntu's website. You can try Ubuntu or Kubuntu, depending on the look and way it runs. Kubuntu is more like Windows, Ubuntu is more like Mac.

Usually there is an alternative program for Linux, and there may be a program like Parallels or VMware Fusion, etc.

There is a 64 bit version.
