Questions for Welders or People who know them?

I recently started dating someone who's a welder and I wanted to know "generally" how much time is spent at work...... Thoughts on this job, etc... Also, he works "underground" along highways and I just wanted to know if there's a specific name for these kinds of welders?? Thanks for your time =)

Why don't you just talk to him about his job.  People like to talk about themselves, I am sure he would be thrilled to know that you are interested in his work

Welders generally make a lot of money, but they earn every penny! They are forever crawling around in the hot sun sticking their faces into melted, smoking metal. They are usually 40 hour a week types, and rarely take their work home. It sounds like your date at least avoids the hot sun, though.

Welding is a perishable skill, so they need to stay in practice. It can be hard to get back into the swing of things after a layoff.

Some kinds of welders are much more skilled (such as aircraft aluminum welders) and these can be prima donna types.

The best thing about welders is, of course, that they have to deal with engineers, who are famous for being GREAT lovers. It would be like a man dating a female assistant that organizes photo shoots for swimsuit models. In other words, you could be subjected to great temptation if you ever visit his job site, so be careful...

My brother-in-law was a union pipe-fitter (retired).  That, in general is the union (plumbers and pipe-fitters) that supplies skilled welders to those who need them.  

Welding/pipe-fitting is an excellent, high paying craft.  My brother-in-law was in high demand because he was certified on several different types of welding craft (including some aluminum welding) and he kept his certifications current (but he wasn't a primadonna IMO).  

My bro-in-law rarely worked over 40 hours per week, but he took full-paid overtime whenever he could get it.
