  1. It doesn't hurt to have salt in the tank.  As for healing his tail, Melafix  will help things out, but he should be fine.  I've had tailless fish before, they do just fine.

  2. You do NOT need to buy aquarium salt. The salt can be regular rock salt, table salt, kosher salt or pickling salt, as long as it does NOT contain 'yellow prussiate of soda' (an anticaking agent which generates hydrogen cyanide).

I would salt the tank to a 0.1% salt solution, which is 1tsp per gallon of salt. Salt at this concentration is a healing tonic for golds.

Remember to predissolve the salt -- ie in a mug with some tank water -- and then dribble it SLOWLY in the tank in a high flow area (next to the filter for eg). Dribble it over the course of a few hours so you don't shock your fish with the sudden change in salinity.

To prevent this from happening again you should cover your filter uptake with something. I use cut up pieces of an AquaClear filter sponge:

When your goldie is bigger you'll be able to remove them. I covered mine because I have a black moor in the tank and telescope eyes are an accident waiting to happen. :(

Edit: forgot to add, don't forget to replace the salt after you do a water change. So if you have a 10g tank (ie 10 tsp of salt) and you do a 50% water change, you need to add 5tsp of salt back to maintain the correct level of salt.

  3. people don't realize but u don't have to use special salts just use regular salt.

  4. Ya its said that AQUARIUM salt will help fish heal faster. Don't use table salt because it contains other things in it that are harmful to your fish.  Idk if you really need it but it prob wont hurt. Good Luck

  5. Contrary to what another person wrote, table salt is harmful to fish. Use aquarium salt only.
