Question:

Questions for an Early Childhood program teacher or director?

I have an assignment for my ECE class. I need to interview an ECE teacher or director to obtain information about what their skill standards are and how they abide by them. The questions are below. There is also an example of how I will write up the answers. The example is written as if I was observing the classroom in person which I obviously am not, so just ignore that part. Basically I just need to describe what rules you are supposed to follow in relation to questions A-F and then how you follow them.

If anyone out there can help me out it would be greatly appreciated!

  1. I was an Infant toddler lead teacher for five years.  I am not currently working as one, but am still qualified and certified as Infant Toddler Lead Teacher and Preschool Teacher.

    A. Make sure that the toys are sanitized daily and after each time they get into a child's mouth.  Have wellness policy that states why and when children whom are ill can not come to school.  Make sure the areas are all disinfected, clutter free, and clean.

    B. Include the children's interests in the curriculum planning.  For example: while outside playing the children are amazed by the catterpillars in the trees.  Do a week curriculum on Caterpillars.  Providers need to be flexable with scheduling.  There should be structure... the same thing in the same order each day, but allow for unplanned things...ex. a baby whom is crying and having a bad day.  If there are more than one provider this becomes easier.

    C. Through portfolios and the state's developmental learning diagnostic evaluations.

    D.  I learned a lot about this through a class: Infant Toddler Curriculum planning.  It is best to go along with what the children are interested in but have a plan.  Most centers have themes... or child initiated themes which I mentioned above.  The curriculum for Toddlers should include: Circle time with stories and songs, Excercise, Fine motor, Art, Sensory, Social Emotional.... For preschool it needs to include math, science, ABC's, and more language based learning.

    E. Supporting the family is very important.  I communicated with them daily through day sheets that told what the child did during the day, and calling them whenever I thought they needed to know something.  Listen to what they have to say about their child or their life.... even if you really do not care act like you do.

    F. Keep educating yourself.  Have team meetings atleast monthly.  Maintain professional relationships with your coworkers.
