if u tell the company u work for that u speak a certain language, do they keep on making u fly to that country? also do u have any choice into where you fly to? also (little question about food now...) do you get given different food to the rest of the passengers and flight crew?

how long do you get to sleep for on long haul flights?

thanks

  1. Pilots choose which flights they will fly, based on which aircraft they are certified to fly.  The more senior the pilot the better chance of getting his/her choice.  They are served the same meals as everyone else, unless there is a shortage then no meal. The sleeping, on international flights is worked out between the crew.  But they do alternate landings. Answer to something you did not ask.  Pilots are paid by the hour and only when the engines are running does that time count

  2. I am not a pilot but I do know all international airports and flight controlers speak English. I don't know under which treaty or world organization this rule comes under but they all speak English.

  3. Well Kid, you're gonna get the best answer right here! lemme answer your questions nest to numbers! Yahoo! 1.Sometimes 2.Yes if its your own personal aircraft or if your a commercial pilot for UAE or Brittish airways you may be eligble to choose where you want to fly. 3.Yes our food is better, Much better! Because we bring our own! 4. We often take methamphetemines to help us stay awake four days on end! You can sleep in your special cabon if the aircraft has at least one other experienced pilot manning the throttle etc.

  4. The international language of the air is English, so for international flights that's what is required. Regarding where you fly to, it depends on your qualifications.  If you're qualified to operate a certain aircraft and have passed the company's line checks, you can finding yourself flying any route.  Like any job, you can decline to fly a particular route, but you may be looking for a new position shortly . . .  Depends on your seniority and "clout".

Foodwise, it's still the case that neither pilot eats the same food as the other, just to avoid any problem with food poisoning etc. Usually the Captain gets the first choice and the First Officer gets to pick from what's left, though they usually come to an agreement.

Pilot's duty hours are strictly regulated, on long-haul flights there is usually a second set of pilots to spell the first.  Often the routine is that the "principal" pilots fly the take-off and settling onto route, and somewhere in the middle the second two relieve the first for the en-route cruise, usually one at a time for continuity, and the first pair take over again for the end of the flight, landing etc.

Larger aircraft these days normally have crew rest areas and bunks, unlike the old days when the crew had to rest sitting in the cabin - as if you could!

Even on the shorter routes, the two pilots usually alternate between who will be the "pilot flying" and the "pilot non-flying" each sector.  Often the First Officer will handle one leg, doing the take-off, cruise and landing while the Captain handles the co-pilot's duties, and then they swap for the next leg. Or, some companies have a policy that the Captain does the take-offs and landings, and the First Officer is allowed to handle the aircraft en-route.  So, you see, it's a bit of a moveable feast.
