  1. Nix and Hydra

Pluto was discovered in 1930 by a fortunate accident. Calculations which later turned out to be in error had predicted a planet beyond Neptune, based on the motions of Uranus and Neptune. Not knowing of the error, Clyde W. Tombaugh at Lowell Observatory in Arizona did a very careful sky survey which turned up Pluto anyway.

Suggestions for names by staff at the Flagstaff Observatory, where the planet was discovered, included the previously suggested Cronus and Minerva, and the planet's eventual name Pluto. The suggestion of the name Pluto did not come from any scientists or astronomers. Instead, it was suggested by an eleven year old schoolgirl, living in Oxford, England, called Venetia Burney!

EDIT - The innermost moon, Charon, was discovered by James Christy on 1978 June 22, nearly half a century after Pluto.

EDIT - A pair of small moons orbiting Pluto, which were discovered by NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope, have been named Nix and Hydra. Discovered in 2005

  2. 1. Nix and Hydra.

    2. Clyde Tombaugh in 1930.

    3. Venetia Burney Phair named Pluto. She was a child at the time.

EDIT: Gnom Pluto has three confirmed moons- Charon, Nix and Hydra. Charon, being the largest moon, was discovered when Pluto was discovered. Nix and Hydra were confirmed in 2006 when the Hubble took the sharpest image of Pluto to that date and revlealed 2 more natural satellites of the planet.
