Questions from a DSLR beginner?

Hi all, I'm new to learning about DSLRs. I've got a question to make. What's the difference between buying a normal set, and a kit set? I realised the kit set is normally more expensive.

Thanks so much!

  1. A kit set will include one or more general purpose lenses, not necessarily of the same brand as the camera body.  There may also be other accessories.

I always avoid them because the included lenses are not great, and I would rather choose my own, but as a beginner it might well be the way to go for you.

  2. It depends where you buy it. Like at Circuit City a kit is the camera and same brand lens (usually 18-55 mm). A non-kit is only the body, so that way, you can select which lens will suit your needs. There are those store that sells the kit with a lot of accessories along with a lens or lenses, however, most of the times it's a cheaper brand lens they offer with it.  For general photography, you can do with an 18-55 mm lens or closer to that. For a couple of hundreds at least, you can get one with higher zoom capability. For the kit, just make sure it's the same brand that the lens is offered.
