  1. All I have is to finger train them, you get a glove, they love to peck at it, no biggy. Then let go, they automatically climb onto your fingers.

  2. Wow ! Lot of questions .

First , you should buy a keet from a breeder , so he can be hand fed and tame for you . If you buy from a breeder , ask if they sell the cage there too ( I usually have a few cages for sale for my customers for convenience ) With breeders, the cages and the birds are much cheaper than in the pet stores .

When you buy the bird , get it home and let it rest for a day or 2 ( because he is dramatize enough by moving from one place to another in a strange invironment . ) Then you make a routine , bond with it, talk softly to it and start to keep telling it step up  _ step up ...Sooner or later he will get the idea . You should put him in your room so you can see him ( and he can see you ) all the time , at night time, get a town to cover it . Please buy the cage as big as you can afford it. Bird needs room to fly , have a few toys , and then change it often , don't have way too many that he will have no place to fly . The first week, he would just sit there doing nothing ...as I said...strange place , strange face ...once he gets used to the surrounding , he will move aeround and eat and chirp . Have fun . ( If you don't know any breeder in your area , you can go to www.hoobly.com to find one near you . ) TM.

  4. Hi.

-when you get him home, place his cage in a place that isn't too close to the floor, as they fell safer when they are higher up.

-I would suggest having the cage all set up before you bring the bird home (that it what I did/do) that way the bird isn't stuck in a box or small carry cage in some new environment waiting on you

-2-3 three toys is good, but get extra one to rotate every two weeks or so  so that he doesn't get too bored

-if you have a dresser that is taller that is a good place, out of the path of the air/heat vent and away from drafty areas

    - I don't see the harm in putting it on your desk as long as your desk has the space and isn't too close to the floor

-putting it your room is fine

-the first week I wouldn't really mess with it him, just give him a chance to get used to everything, you can talk to him though, they like music and t.v.

-he needs at least two perches, different sizes and textures, like wood and a sandy perch or a rope perch, he needs cuttlebone

    - I wouldn't recommend putting a mirror in the cage until he seems pretty bonded to you because he will be more fascinated with the mirror and not you

-fresh veggies, like broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, etc. are good for him

-DO NOT give him avocado, caffeine, chocolate, salty foods, etc.

-DO NOT use candles around him, harsh cleaning chemicals/sprays (move him to another room when using them, then let the room air out for a little while),

_ I would recommend buying a book on Parakeets, they aren't expensive

-clean the cage once a week, and using newspaper on the bottom fine

    -cover his cage at night

  5. -let the parakeet be alone for a a couple days before trying to handle it.

-it doesn't matter when you get the cage just don't get it after the bird...obviously.

-have about 2-3 toys in the cage.

-put the cage in a draft free area and out of the sunlight.

-you can put it on your desk just make sure lights aren't constantly shining on it.

-the bird could be very frightened during the first week so just use a calm voice with it and be gentle.

you need cuttle bone in the cage.

  6. how big does the cage have to be?

mainly I reccomend 18x18x18 min. and 24x24x24 is good

What should I do when I get the parakeet?

already have his cage set up. make sure he has planty of feed and water. also cover up his cage for a day. on the second day keep it uncovered but only handle him whnen changing the food and water. on the third day you can start interacting with him.

How long should I wait to teach it step up?

On the third day. You want to start interacting with him as soon as possible. Do your normal routine cleaning the cage, changing the food and water, ect.. untill when he sees your hands he doesn't move or looked alarmed. Than the nest step is to move your hands closer and closer to him untill he looks startled or moves, when he does that say "Thats okay, we'll try later." In  a cheerfull tone. Do that untill you can get your finger right above his feet without him looking alarmed or moving. Than push back on his belly and say step up. Naturally birds when being caught of ballance naturally lift one foot up. When he is ready he will put both feet up on your finger. Once he seems fine (non alerted and not moving right away) move him a little and a little untill you take him out of the cage. When you are doing this make sure all blinds are closed and doors are shut. Make sure it's a calm enviorment. And no music also. Only take him out for short periods for a long tome so it doesn't become over whelming

Should I get the cage and the bird altogether?

Well, not sure what you mean by that. If your getting the bird from a petstore, they put them in a box and they are supposed to be but in there for an hour max. I'd get the cage first so it can be ready when he gets home

One bird.. so how many toys should I get?

As many as you can! Birds love to play, especially budgies with mirrors, swings, and bells. Don't put to many in at one time, because they like varity so you should be switching they toys often and you don't want to be going to he pet store everytime you need to switch

How many do I put in the cage?

Like I said. They like variety. Put in maybe five and buy ten when you get him, than later you have a second set.

What is the ideal place of putting the cage?

Well, you want to put it where there is lot of interaction in the room. However the kitchen, usually that has the most interaction is one of the most dangerous. Fumes and smells from the kitchen can be dangerous to the bird. Also the bird needs partial sunlight, but birds over heat easily so you want mainly shade for him. Usually a room I suggest is the family room, or your room if your in there often.

Can I put it on my desk? my mom says no though..

A desk is a perfect place! You don't want a stand as it can be wobbly and birds don't like that. If you do put it on your desk, make sure you get a skirt. A skirt goes along the bottom to prevent seed and messes getting out.

  7. Hi  i have a parakeet,a bourke paarkeet .

    - you should get a cage first and put 2-4 toys in

    - you can put the cage on the desk but it will get messy

    - gently cup the bird in your hand and place him in the cage

    - you can put it in your room(if you have cats close the door.

    - it will mostley be shy and unsure with you on the 1st week

good luck!   by the way: i recommend a bourke parakeet there much sweeter than budgies and look almost like wild birds.
