i want to be a big brother and im curious how the matching process is..

1. I'm 23 y/o guy. Will i get matched with someone close to 18 because of my age? i think i will feel more comfortable mentoring someone much younger like 10 - 14 as i have more to teach them..

2. Do you get assigned to boy or girl because they are asking for a big bro or big sis?

or because they live with single father or mother and they want a father figure or mother figure?

or big brother.. is always matched with a lil bro and big sister is matched with lil sis?

3. Will i be able to choose from several kids based on their personality or background.. as i see fitted? I don't want some really "screwed up" kid.. i mean alil screwed up is ok... who isn't these day with the divorce rate? but not like with drugs and gangs..etc.

thank you in advance for your answers.

  1. Your questions can only be answered by Big Brothers Big Sisters directly.  They have matching counselors that will work with you to answer these questions and match you with a young brother or sister.

Their website is www.bbbs.org.  It is filled with information about their program and how it works.  Click on the Volunteering link and they have a link on the left that says How it Works.  You can also connect with one of their matching counselors here.

You will find in your reading on their site that they have less men volunteering and really need your help.  You will also see that you do have to go through "hoops" to apply.  This is obviously for safety reasons anytime you are volunteering with children, to protect them and YOU.

I hope this works out because you can make such a difference in the life of one child by being there for them when they have no one else.

My best wishes. Hope this helps. Teresa
