Question:

Questions on car registration, title, lien holders, and gift giving...?

I just bought a new car from the dealership, I want to give it to my husband as a surprise, (he doesn't know yet!) but I have tons of questions regarding the registration. The bank has the title obviously as I have not even made one payment yet, the car is in my name, but I want to transfer it over to his name for business purposes. How do I go about it? I know the DMV can make the transfer from one spouse to another if the car is a gift, and there is also a small transfer fee, but I have no idea what to do next? I'm confused bc I know if I had the title, all I would have to do is get a new title with his name on it, but since I dont have the title, only the registration, what am I supposed to do?

  1. if you have not already registered it in your name, simply put it in both of your names:  John D Doe OR Mary C Doe.  Or.... Just his name.   If you have already put it in your name, most states allow transfers between close family members with only a transfer fee (No sales tax)  The loan company would have to know and approve of this tho
